In the past month, our country and world has been ravaged by natural and man-made disasters. Hurricanes, wildfires, mass shootings... and all resulted in the numerous posts promising prayers for the victims.
There is nothing wrong with praying for those effected by these travesties. But prayer is not enough. Jesus taught and showed us that to be Christian is about more than praying and following the rules; we also need to do something.
Recall the parable of the Good Samaritan. The other two passerbys could have prayed for the man who was laying on the side of the road but Jesus does not mention this because when our neighbor is hurt and in need, prayer is not enough. Charity, conversation, donation, and a helping hand are all ways to do something for our neighbor.
As the holidays start to creep up, opportunities to help our fellows will pop up more frequently. Donations of money and items are both wonderful, but so is our time and company. If you're unsure about what else you could, the Corporal Works of Mercy are a great inspiration. They are:
