My husband is a mommy's boy; he would do anything for his mother. Many people believe that this is a sign of a good man. So it stands to reason that the best man, Jesus, would be a mommy's boy as well.
The Wedding at Cana is an example of how much Jesus loves his mother and how he would do anything for her. The story is common enough, Jesus, His disciples, and his mother are all at the wedding when the host runs out of wine. Mary tells Jesus and he brushes her off, saying that it isn't his time and that there was nothing he could do. But Mary pushes, telling the servants to do whatever Jesus would tell them. From there, Jesus would perform his first miracle, turning water into wine.
There are several things we can learn from this one story about the relationship between Jesus and His Mother. Firstly, their relationship and love is very human. We can relate to and understand this situation, whether as a mother or a child. This story also helps illustrate why we intercede through Mary. Even though Jesus said he wasn't ready, even though he essentially told her no, Mary had the ear and heart of her Son and pushed Him to help the wedding host and guests. Thus, we know that by interceding to Mary, we have a step closer to Jesus than perhaps going directly to Him because of anxiety or need for someone to be on our side, just as she was for the host. We pray through Mary because she has a unique relationship with the Son of God that no other saint has, she is His Mother. Finally, we know that Mary wants to bring us closer to Him. She encourages the servants to go to Him, to listen to Him, and she does the same for us. Her various apparitions have all been to bring us closer to Him. Mary can more than intercede for us, she can help bring us to Him through an active devotion to Her.
We should all be a momma's boy (or girl) when it comes to Mary. All she wants is for us to be closer to Her and to Her Son.
