1.) Turning It Off
Remember when God visited Elijah? God was not found in the earthquake or the storm, but in the faint, gentle whisper of the wind. One way to hear God's voice is by listening to the quiet whisperings in our lives. However, we cannot hear them if our life is full of background noise. The TV, the radio, Spotify, etc. Turn it off, turn it down, and allow space for God's voice.
2.) Turning It On
Surround yourself with ways to listen to the Lord, such as podcasts, blogs, and positive music. It isn't going to be easy to hear God's voice in places that do not make space for God. Recall that where two or three are gathered in God's name, God is present. This means when we make space for God, God is there! By choosing God-focused media, even sometimes, we are creating more opportunities to hear God's voice.
3.) Creating a Community
I mentioned earlier that where two or three are gathered in God's name, God is present. By creating a community for yourself that is full of supportive believers, you'll find it much easier to hear God in places you may not be intentionally looking. God is within each one of us and by surrounding ourselves with our brothers and sisters who are also seeking our Lord, we are more likely to hear God's words from their mouths than those who do not.
4.) God's Own Words
Be honest, when is the last time you cracked open your Bible? Not just a devotional but your own personal Bible? That sacred book was written by and for God; the Holy Spirit guided the hands that penned those words. By reading the Word, we are literally listening to God! I can think of no better way for you to make space and intentionally seek God in your life.
5.) God's Own
There is a reason that priests attend so much school- they have been taught how to interpret and teach God's Word in way we have not. Priests and others who have attended school to learn about theology and the Word in a way lay people have not. Make good use of those resources! Pay attention to the connections and footnotes they and other resources share with you. There is more the Bible than what is on one page, things connect and have deeper meanings we may not realize!
Where are you most likely to hear God? Adoration? The Mass? On a hike? A certain friend's voice or advice?
