Be honest for a moment, have you stuck to your resolutions for 2018? Odds are, many of us will not last the first week of January, let alone the month. But I don't offer this view with cynicism, I offer it with faith.
We have been blessed to be part of a faith and children of a God who does not believe in second chances, but new beginnings. The difference is, God does not dwell on our past mistakes and sins. Instead, God shares grace and love like new every day, welcoming us in to God's fold.
What does this mean for us?
It means that everyday is a new day. We don't have to wait for a momentous point in time, like a new year or a particular liturgical season to allow us to turn over a new leaf. We see and hear about this merciful, loving God again and again in the New Testament, because that is ultimately what Jesus was sent to proclaim; the mercy and love of God!
Jesus shared examples of this when He offered forgiveness to the weeping woman, the tax collectors who would become his disciples, and even his chosen rock, Peter. Each was offered a fresh start, a clean slate in His arms and love. There was no residual stain of sin.
Today, I want to invite and encourage you to realize that God wants nothing more than to welcome you with open arms. There is no guilt, no condemnation; only a plea for you to desire the new beginning God is offering you each morning. Don't give up on becoming closer to Christ, don't give up the resolutions you created in an effort to better yourself for God. Today is a new day, today is God's morning!
