Only a year ago, you were a high school senior, counting down the days until you graduated and were finally free. And now you're here. You're a freshman again. Keep a few things in mind as you start this new adventure.
1. Remember you're all in the same boat.
Your roommates, your classmates, you're all freshman. None of you have all the same friends, none of you know where are you are or what you're doing. You are going to meet so many different kinds of people. It will be so easy to make new friends as long as you make yourself available. Put yourself out there, invite your hall-mates to have coffee or go to an event. You all need friends, you're all in the same boat.
2. Choose carefully.
This is the chance to reinvent yourself a bit. You have the opportunity to create new habits and traits. But choose carefully. You can become the person who works out every morning or you can become the person who sleeps till noon every morning. You can start doing crosswords or you can stop reading for leisure. These next four or five years are going to create lifelong habits that you haven't had a chance to form while in high school. Choose carefully.
3. Get out of your dorm room.
Netflix is great, trust me. I'm a huge fan. But get your butt out of your dorm room. The gym is not just for working out, there are all kinds of activities. Intramurals can be a blast. Join a club or two, attend the meetings, get involved. Not only for the resume, but because this remember those friends I mentioned? This a chance to make friends with people who aren't freshman. There is almost always something happening, especially at the beginning of the school year. Go do something while the weather is still nice. When it gets cold, that's when you can watch Netflix with your new-found friends while it rains or something.
4. Talk to your family and old friends.
Don't leave them in the dark. Keep them in the loop. You don't have to talk every day, you don't have to tell them everything, but you should still talk to them as much as you feel comfortable. They love you. Talk to them.
You're going to do great.
