This past semester, I added a new "to do" to my Sundays, aside from attending Mass, writing blog posts, and wrapping up any homework left undone...
To rest. To rest like my life depended on it.
"And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made." Genesis 2:2
Even God, with all of His power and might needed to rest on the seventh day. He needed to take time and see all that had been done and see how good it was. After working hard, time needed to be taken to rest, recover, and appreciate the fruits of His own labor.
"Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a sabbath of solemn rest to Jehovah: whosoever doeth any work therein shall be put to death." Exodus 35:2
God, with great wisdom, commanded that we do the same and take time to rest. And as important as this was 2,000 years, this has become even more today. Our lives filled with unnecessary adrenaline, feeling rushed and stressed without reprieve. This makes taking rest all the more important for our physical, mental, and spiritual health. When we intentionally set aside a day to rest and rejoice, we can better appreciate everything God has given us.
Use your time intentionally this week so that you can minimize the work you do this coming Sunday. Dedicate Sunday to the good; attend Mass, relax, take time to do something you love, and give God thanks for it. You don’t have to do literally no work, just try to
be mindful of how you spend your time and share it with God.
